Examples pulled from meetings are in the table below. Most issues with Zoom quality are from the fact that the upload side of most internet connections is much smaller than the download side. For every ten packets of data that comes down, one packet of data is sent up to acknowledge receipt of the ten packets.
When the data packet is not sent up, the server will then try and resend the ten previous packets. This is why turning off the video camera is important — you will not know that your upload has filled the available bandwidth. You will experience download issues because of a full upload connection, even if you have plenty of download bandwidth available. The download issues will not only affect your Zoom session but everyone at your location using the internet. Zoom does make statistics available to you during a session.
These stats can be helpful if you are experiencing issues. Zoom has information about the statistics and what they mean on the Meeting and phone statistics page in the Help Center. The available bandwidth is shared between clients, and speeds may be much lower at peak times. Most residential connections provide much higher download speed than uploads. Video conferencing bandwidth requirements are usually equal in both directions.
Is 5GHz Wireless better than 2. What is the actual real-life speed of wireless networks? I can’t connect to my router’s admin interface? Access Point?

What is Port Triggering? How to disable notifications to “Finish setting up” Windows 10? Wireless speed limited to 54 Mbps? Zoom handles group calls much more efficiently than Skype, though Skype apparently uses less bandwidth for calls. Screensharing is the least data-intensive task you can do on a video call, typically taking up less than Kbps 1.
The app you use can make a big difference, too, as some of them are pretty light on data when the conversation is but tear through a lot more when participants are added looking at you, Skype.
Most video call apps use a minimum of about Kbps 3. There are several ways to check your bandwidth usage and total bandwidth for your Internet connection.
The simplest way to do this with a PC is by opening Windows Task Manager to see bandwidth for either a wired or wireless connection. You can also use websites like Ookla Speedtest to measure your download and upload speeds in real time.
Finally, you can free up bandwidth by controlling which devices get priority in your home network. Image credit: Anna Shvets on Pexels. Bandwidth data gathered using Bitmeter OS.
